Last January the accounting of wintering waterbirds was implemented. Ornithologists of Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum, who have been conducting bird counting since 1993, contributed.
During accounting, the museum's ornithologists counted more than 7 500 wintering birds. The most common were mallards, common goldeneyes and Eurasian coots. Less frequent observed birds were greater scaups and long-tailed ducks. The red-crested pochard, which is rarely seen in Lithuania, was observed near Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant.
