Devastating winter for owls2021 02 16
A thick layer of snow and a long-lasting low air temperature is harmful to owls. These weather conditions pose a particular threat to owl species, which diet consists of common voles and mice. Because of deep snow, these animals are hard to reach. Due to the low air temperature, owls consume a lot of energy and cannot replenish their resources.
The ornithologists of Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum received news about weakened or found dead Barn owls (Tyto alba), Long-eared owls (Asio otus) and Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus). It is predicted that this winter will be disastrous for many Lithuania wintering owls species. Hundreds and maybe thousands of birds will die.
